Print Advertisement in Bicycle Quarterly
Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Today I sent in the artwork for an ad I am running in Bicycle Quarterly magazine. You can have a sneak peek of the ad here.
It’s a bit esoteric to the average reader, but a magazine is only as good as its editor. BQ’s editor, Jan Heine, is a great one. Two things are immediately obvious in reading the magazine: Jan approaches everything he does with the exacting methodology of an engineer; Jan knows his history and won’t be fooled. With those two standards, BQ covers topics in a thoroughness I’ve only seen in scientific journals. Every article is long enough to be a cover story in the typical glossy. There is no mindless filler or padding. The result is an utter joy to read; I never feel like I’m wasting time, wading through copy some hack churned out to make his car payment.
While I don’t know how much business the ad will generate for me, I do know the business it generates will be the type of interesting, informed individual and cyclist I enjoy being around. To riff on an earlier post, you’re not going to find tourists reading BQ. Its material is purely the domain of travelers.
